【Day79 in Baguio】Toward the 5-minute memorized speech….

Day 79 (89 days left) of my temporary language study abroad program in Baguio, Philippines.
Term 4 is now in its midpoint, and although each term consists of 4 weeks, I have been focusing more on the blog renovation during the first half of the term, which has left me with less time for independent study of English, which I regret. The class itself ends at 5:00 p.m., so it is important how I spend my time, whether it is promoting independent study, spending time on hobbies, or relaxing.

Public speaking, then….

As I mentioned in my last article, I finished a 15-minute long speech at the end of last semester, and now I am preparing for another one. The format of the next speech will be a “memorized speech,” which is a 5-minute speech without a script. I was given the following three choices for the theme.

①How our differences make us unique?

②Social media affects people’s self-image and self-esteem

③A student’s grade: Is it a fair method of evaluation?

Among them, I chose ①「How our differences makes us unique? The reason is that the topic is rather abstract. I thought it would be difficult to convey the differences between the Philippines and Japan in question (3).

What would you choose?

First Draft

After an hour of brainstorming and four hours of writing, I completed the first issue of the manuscript. As for the number of words, I am a rather fast talker, so I calculated that I needed 100 words per minute, which meant that I needed around 500 words.
I know it’s a bit of a crap shoot, but I’ll leave it on my blog as a testament to my hard work.

Good afternoon, everyone. I’ve uploaded articles every day since I came here. Kindly check my blog in your free time, then, I’ll be pleasured sincerely. OK, let’s start with main issues about our appearances and characters. Today’s topic is “How our differences make us unique.” …What do you think about this issue, guys? It’s quite difficult topic. So, let’s make sense this together. Before I get to the main point, I searched the meaning of “unique” in dictionary. It says “definition being the only one of a particular type”. The most important thing is becoming one of type according to the definition. All right, let’s proceed to next reference.

Then, what kind of differences are there in our life? When I thought about this issue in my first time, I caught up some ideas. For example, nationalities, skin color, looks and characters. They are divided into two types each. One is changeable features like looks and characters. Other is unchangeable features like nationalities and skin color.

OK, then, I’ll introduce two interesting stories which feature our differences in Japan.

First, There is a best seller book in Japan, the title is “Appearance is 90% of who you are.”. It was launched in 2005, and it have been published over the one million of copies. It refers to our differences, especially our appearances. It says that our first impressions are almost decided for first 5 seconds. It bases on how we are seen against others in first meeting up. It says also, therefore, we have to pay attention our appearance like having our hair set, renewaling our cloths, and straightening our backs because those are all changeable differences. If you want to be seen a smarter, you can choose official style of cloth and ordinary hair. If you want to be seen remarkable, you can choose Pari’s fashion coordination and eccentric hair style, also. The end of the day, we can express our unique characters by controlling our changeable differences.

On the other hand, we have unchangeable differences. It can’t be helped to control ourselves. Is the answer how we face on the reality accepting only? No. We have the abilities to make our differences being regarded one of features for all people. In Japan, there are special restaurants called “RESTAURANT OF MISTAKEN ORDERS”. The waiter and waitress often mistake orders. Why? Because all of them have dementia. They can’t inform the orders correctly, but customers accept and enjoy mistaken orders. It is a new business which focusing our unchangeable differences. There were less chances to get a job for a person who has dementia. However, they created a new concept restaurant, and they keep making diners fun every day.

OK, let’s proceed to the climax. There are two types of differences. We can overwhelm and aim to be an ideal person beyond our original preferences and appearances. Furthermore, we can get a chance to succeed occasionally because our differences are sometimes worthwhile to be featured. In conclusion, we should realize what do I have to change and what do I have specific differences. It helps you to be unique.

Sumaary

Since the subject has biological and social satirical aspects, I could not write everything I thought as it was in the last issue, but it became more like a thesis. Although it took time, I think I have grown to be able to write this amount of English in one day.

However, I honestly wonder if the writing is engaging enough to attract an audience. I will be working closely with my teacher from here on, so I’ll let you know the final full story and tips as soon as I can!
